Dick, GWB, and Hillary's Church

The United Methodist Church added this to the Book of Discipline, which internally approximates acts of Congress:

The search for truth is not well served by definitive statements for which we demand unwavering affirmation, but by a process of dialogue in which we seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, honor the wisdom of the past, make use of new discoveries, and respect the diversity of human experience.

We therefore renounce any pursuit of our mission by coercive means, whether military, economic, psychological, or cultural. We also recognize that as God's prevenient grace is active everywhere, we cannot know all the forms in which God may choose to exercise that grace, and in response to Christ's command to love, we understand it to be our obligation to be especially sensitive to God's call as recognized and proclaimed in other living faiths.
